Granada: A Melting Pot of Cultures

Granada’s a place of beauty, culture, and history. A cultural melting pot, with the major attractions being Alhambra, Generalife and roses in season. Aside from these, there are also other attractions like a number of museums and several shopping places that can be visited during a vacation in Granada. If you’re planning a trip to Granada, Spain and want to see the main attractions, you’ll have to be prepared for some walking. The center of the city is relatively small, so if you plan on visiting several of its museums and churches, consider bringing comfortable shoes and have us by your side as your guide!

We begin the exploration of this ancient city with Bib Rambla square, a popular meeting point since the Nasrid period. Then we make our way to the Cathedral of Granada, which is a must-see for those who want to see an amazing example of the fusion of different architectural styles in one form. Afterwards, we will take a walk through the street Caldereria Nueva, which is adorned with Moroccan teahouses (teterias) and handicraft stores. For this reason, it is also known as “Little Morocco”. Then we walk into Albaicin…
Whitewashed houses (carmens), narrow streets, and gardens full of roses are not all that make up this beautiful and historic neighborhood. It is also the Andalusian spirit that comes along with them all. Albaicin is like a puddle that reflects the sky and the carmens (villas) are the stars. Each window is a passage that leads to another Andalusian dream. Albaicin dates back to the 13th century, the time of the Nazarites, and covers an area that stretches from Saint Nicholas to the banks of the river Darro. Once home to slew of palaces, forty thousand inhabitants and thirty mosques, it is now on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This old Arab quarter is full of bars and terraces overlooking the view of the red sunset that adorns Al Hambra every day.
The walk down to the Paseo de los Tristes is a truly exhilarating experience. At every turn around a carmen, you are offered another breathtaking view of the magnificent Al Hambra, accompanied by the scent of roses growing in the gardens. The Darro River, which stretches along Paseo de los Tristes, gives you the feeling of an oasis with its cool climate. At the end of the Paseo de los Tristes, the Plaza Nueva welcomes us. Even though the name means “New Square”, it is the oldest square in Granada with many historic state buildings. At the end of our tour, we visit the only Nasrid trade camp that has been present in the entire Iberian Peninsula since the 14th century.
